ABSTRACT

With the use of the internet and a radio link, the control system we propose herein offers a new method to control

home appliances from any remote terminal, including a local server. We first construct the system's hardware with

personal computers, interface cards, radio transmitters and receivers, microprocessors and AC phase control circuits and

then control the hardware with a window-type software code and a microprocessor code we developed. The proposed

system can turn on or turn off home appliances, regulate their output power and schedule their usage, all via a remote

control means. The prototype of the system, after being repeatedly tested, functions properly, verifying that the proposed

system is feasible.

I.  INTRODUCTION

In our daily life, many electric appliances and equipment, such as electric lights, fans, air conditioners, and  so

on, are often not turned off when they actually should be; hence, the electric power is often wasted. The problem occurs

in various houses, buildings, supermarkets, shopping malls, apartments, and the like. Combining the convenience of

touchscreen as an option, we, hence, propose in this study a control system to effectively control electric appliances

and equipment at home to conserve energy, to save human labor in implementing said control and to widen the control

range of the appliances, such as regulating their output power and setting up their usage schedule, all via a remote control

means using the widely-available internet and a radio link so as to tackle the mentioned problem effectively

At present, the annual electricity usage in Taiwan reaches approximately 131.7 billion kW-hr.  Given a conservative

estimate that only 5% of the annual electricity usage is to be saved with the proposed system, approximately 6.5 billion

kW-hr electric power can be conserved annually in Taiwan alone should the proposed system be widely implemented at home and

in factory.  In the long run, the economic benefit accumulated by extensively adopting this system can be remarkable.

VI.  CONCLUSION

In our daily life, people often forget to turn off electric appliances and equipment, resulting in a frequent waste of electric

energy. To resolve this problem, we propose, in this study, an internet-related system to remotely control our home appliances

and equipment to conserve electric energy, to save human labor in implementing the control and to widen the control scope,

such as regulating the appliances’ output power and scheduling their usage at will.

To create said system, we explore the expandability of a PC I/O interface card, the outward connectability of the internet and

the ease in wireless-control implementation. We build the system’s hardware with personal computers, interface cards, radio

transmitters and receivers, microprocessors and AC phase control circuits. We next write a window-type software code and

microprocessor code to control said hardware. The proposed system can turn on or turn off home appliances, regulate their output

power and schedule their usage, all through remote controlThe prototype of the system works properly after repeated tests,

indicating that the proposed system is sound and practical.
